What is a Lactation Consultant?
A Lactation Consultant is health care professional that is an expert in breastfeeding and lactation management.
Before becoming an LC, I had to take several courses in the art and science of breastfeeding. I also had to perform hands-on assistance for more than 1000 hours before I could qualify to write the international exam. The exam was a rigorous six hour exam.
Every year LCs are required to keep current in breastfeeding practices and must re-certify every five years.
Lactation Consultants in private practice assist families in the comfort of their own home with the flexibility of day, evening, night and weekend visits.
